“We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are.” Anais Nin

If our relationships are suffering, our checkbook is lacking, and our life in general is not where we want it to be, then it is time for a checkup on what are our predominant thoughts are all about.

The Law of Thinking deals with our mental attitudes and how we see things.  If we want to know how we are thinking, all we have to do is look at our current results.

Perception

When I was teaching Interpersonal Communication at the college level, there was an entire chapter dedicated to Perception. Why?

Because our perceptions form what our world views are. Perceptions form our points of view. Our points of view, in turn, are created by how we are thinking. Remember our quote by Nin above?

Questions, Questions

Learning to look at things differently than the way we call normal, will actually change what we look at.  Here’s a personal example.

Earlier this month I was reviewing the results of my business over this past year. What I noticed was a pattern that had developed over the last 5 years.

My first thought was to ask the questions:

  • “Why does this keep happening to me???
  • What am I doing wrong???”

Sounds like good questions to me?  How about you?
Learning to ask the right questions will teach you about what you are thinking. The right questions will lead you to understand how your thinking is sabotaging you.

The question I began asking myself was:

  • What am I thinking that creates this result?

The answer came about a week later.

Learning to look at things differently allowed me to discover something about myself that was emotionally charged and created this same result over and over again. What an AHA!

The answer always comes after the question is asked.  It is seldom about what you are doing, but rather what you are thinking.

Unless you become aware, you cannot change.

As author and philosopher Ken Wilber says: “Awareness, in and of itself, is transformative.”

Our ability to think determines our quality of living.  Listen to what you think.

Learning to look at things differently and asking different questions allows us to create a very different reality than the one we currently live in.

Take the time to re-evaluate what is going on in your reality. You can change it for the better with just one small step at a time.

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs

As Paulette knows, this comes at a very appropriate time in my life. As one begins the process of changing their thoughts, oftentimes the result of past thinking still shows up. I know that in my journey now, I have to stand strong and respond with,”I’m sorry. I know I ordered this before, but I have changed my mind. I don’t want this dish anymore. I want to trade it in for a new one.” And then as all things take time to prepare, so must one be patient for the results of new thinking to show up. Thank you Paulette, for staying with me. You do such a great service with your blog.
