What do Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Jim Rohn have in common?

They all have the skills of discipline, practice, study, focus and a willingness to fail as well as succeed.

Most of us like going through the motions thinking that what we are doing is good enough. When Michael Jordan was asked about why he practiced so hard, he said, “I’m not out there sweating for three hours every day just to find out what it feels like to sweat.”

He was clearly “sweating” for a purpose…to prepare so he could win. He was there to help his teammates prepare to win.

George Allen, head coach for the Washington Redskins in the 70’s, said, “Winning can be defined as the science of being totally prepared.”

So What?

The skills you need to achieve mastery in Network Marketing take practice and preparation. The only way to win is to practice.

Most people don’t win because of a better company. I see it all the time. I like to call these people the butterflies, flitting from one company to the next never taking the time to learn a skill set. These same people wonder why Network Marketing doesn’t work for them. They simply chase the next “big thing”.

I will agree that there are companies out there that do make it very difficult for a new person to win. There are also companies that are downright scams. There are also companies that do not support their people. Under these circumstances changing companies would be a good thing.

That being said, learn to stick with the tried and true until you have developed a mindset and skill set, have tasted success and have learned the lessons needed to go and experiment. As Robert Schuller says “bloom where you are planted”.

Blooming Where I Was Planted

Here is an example of what I’m talking about. I spent 8 years working my first company. Achieved one of the major levels.

Learned lessons and skills that served me well in life and in my second company, which I was involved with for 13 years. I achieved two levels with this company and have had a residual income for over 5 years.

In my current company, in less than six months achieved a significant level. All the while utilizing the skills learned from the previous companies. I continue to study and learn new skills here also.

How To Win

People win through facing adversity to gain strength and skill. They win through preparation and the development of their mind. They win, as Bob Proctor says, “when they become more valuable”.

If you’ve read Wallace Wattles, you know that money comes to those who become more valuable. Even Jim Rohn tells us this. The whole “value” concept is a time tested principle- The Law of Compensation.

Talent vs. Skill

tiger-woodsDoes Tiger Woods win because of his golf clubs or golf ball? Tiger could probably play with a K-Mart special set of clubs and tear up the golf course. It’s his skill, focus, and purpose that sets him apart.

Yes, Tiger has enormous talent, just like Michael Jordan has. However, without training their minds and bodies, and developing the skill and focus, that talent would have gone to waste.

An Inventory

When was the last time you looked at your skill set? How is your prospecting, qualifying, daily practice commitment, lead follow-up, presentation skills, and mindset going? How are you measuring up?
What area needs the most attention?

If you don’t know, look at your results. Are you moving in the direction that you want? Make the commitment to spend time each day to improve your biggest need areas.

We all have areas that need refinement, practice or creation. We all have areas in which we fall short. We all fail at times.

Abraham Lincoln said, “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.” Are you?

Now What

It is easy to ignore the failure of our skills and blame it on technology, our team or the lack thereof, or the people in general, our company, or the economy. We all have reasons that have been well rehearsed that don’t include us.

George Bernard Shaw said, “People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are or have. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.”

What circumstances or outcome do you want? What do you need to do to make them happen? Your success will not be achieved without working through adversity and change. You will have to sweat and struggle.  In the end, the journey will have been worth it!

  1. Good article. Usually, people who jump from company to company, think they are looking for riches. They are looking for themselves. :-)

  2. GREAT article Paulette. I really like George Shaw’s quote; I should read some of his work, because I’ve liked every quote of his that I’ve heard.

I particularly like your take on how to build upon previous skill sets and not to be complacent and simply blame changing technology for one’s downfall. Technology will always change so we may as well get used to the fact.

The last time my wife FORCED me to watch American Idol, I was taken aback by the number of the (young) contestants who kept telling the judges their reasons for wanting to be the next ‘Idol’. Every one of them stated “Because I want it so much”.

Well, wanting something and going about getting it are two ENTIRELY different things. Heck, I WANT to be 20 again!!!!

Keep up the great work Paulette.

  3. Great comments Luke and Cecilia. Yes, I too would like to be 20 again with all the knowledge I’ve learned. ha ha We all know that no matter what, I’ll never see 20 in this lifetime.

I agree that there is a big difference between wanting and doing. Most of us have that challenge at times. Our goals have to be really important to get us to move forward with action and belief.

    Thanks for your great comments.
